Whitby fish wife at the turn of the 20th century
Another direct watercolour based on an old black and white photograph. Some of my ancestors lived in a fishing community on the East Coast of Scotland, and may well have done something similar to the woman in the picture. Fish wife is a term of abuse ow for someone loud and coarse. But originally it just meant a woman who sold fish - I'm guessing they may well be herring in the barrel.
