Lovely portrait, really nice use of colour - lovely background and foreground style very appealling. Excellent.

Jo ann lovely paintings indeed! How did you get permission to use these photo's for paintings wow well done. Regards Paul.

Thank you for your lovely comments Jeannette and Paul. I came across Curtis's photographs ages ago and was blown away by the beauty that he managed to capture in each photograph. I wrote to the Denver library, where they hold many of Curtis's photo graveures and the copyright, and they requested to see some of my work and then gave me permission. It also depends upon whether a photograph is in the public domain or not as well. I have tried hard to get permission from living relatives of the Native Americans that I have painted, where possible. It is not always easy. I love North America, and spent some time travelling back and forth trying to learn a bit more about the Nation that I visited and their history. It was a great time in my life. These days, I am financially challenged and cannot return, but I will one day, to learn more. Jo-Anne

Beautiful work Jo-Ann.

Lovely portrait and the light background couldn't have been better.

I missed these completely when you posted them last year; this one just popped up in the sidebar and i have to say how I admire your entire portfolio. Lovely paintings of some strong proud faces. I met several Navajo people when I was last in the USA and was very impressed.

Thanks Nora, Lorraine and Diana. I will finally be exhibiting some of my work this year at the local libraries and at an art fair. Though they are quite expensive, it might work for me, so I shall have a go! Take care, J

Hi Jo-Anne, I am very impressed with your wonderful paintings too. I have recently read about the Navajo code talkers. I had read a bit of North American history in the past, but am completely bowled over by their efforts on behalf of a nation that so denigrated them. Thanks so much for showing your work! Best regards, Colleen

After recieving permission from Denver, and the Montana libraries to use some of Edward S Curtis photographs as reference materials for artwork, I have painted a series of prominent figures from Native American history. 30 x 41cm, oil on canvas.
