I never knew that Lew, although many nursery rhymes have darker meanings. Fascinating and beautifully drawn as ever.

What an interesting tale Lewis. As usual a great drawing.

Another great drawing. Grimms fairy tales are very dark, if reading the originals produced for adults so I believe. All your illustrations are excellent Lewis.

Another beauty, Lewis, and the background story is just brilliant! I never knew that but it certainly makes sense. You couldn't blow your nose in those days without risking the chop. The after-effects of the notorious Tudors are still being felt today. Such a sweet lot. Bri

Thanks to all for your great feedback, very much appreciated. As an aside, I used a portrait of Queen Mary I as a reference for the clothes, but gave her a head out of my imagination...the real Queen didn't look mad enough. The Tudors must have been psychopaths.

Interesting read and some picture - and it's a 'quickie'.

Brilliant Lewis; if I'd have lived in that time, I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere near this woman!

And I thought it was a lovely little rhyme! Like your painting, Lewis

Very interesting Lewis and a great painting though she does scare me a bit :)

I never associated the rhyme with her Lew, what a nasty piece of work and I felt sorry for her being imprisoned and beheaded by Elizabeth 1. Bad times Lew bad times...they were all as bad as each other! A wonderful expression on her face though!

Many nursery rhythms have grim origins. I didn't know this one, I came across it whilst reading about Queen Mary 1. She's 'contrary' because she overturned her father's Protestant state, and reverted to Roman Catholicism. She began a merciless persecution of Protestants...for which she became knows as 'Bloody Mary.' The 'gardens' in the rhyme refers to the many cemeteries she needed to bury the dead.

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
