Halnaker Mill
Sent in by Derek Harrison who says 'Great subject, I will go there one day and stand with my back against the mill and watch the sun go down! The suggestion of employing a track leading you into the picture was helpful in the composition, but exact positioning of the main elements of the picture was certainly a challenge. I wanted the mill itself to be dominant in its location and massive. Colours used: washes to start - Cerulian Blue (top) to Alizarin (lower sky) to Yellow Ochre (middle and foreground), Cadmium Red Pale Hue with some toning down with Burnt Umber for the brickwork. Burnt Umber and Cobalt blue for shadows. Cadmium and cerulean pale wash for distant hills . The foreground uses virtually every other colour in my box (12 colours altogether!) in separate washes and touches including a little scratching. Creating a credible foreground and middle ground textures is my current challenge, and here I feel that I could have added more detail to the track surface but its easy to over do the fiddling isn't it!
