The lane home by Julie Wilson

Charcoal is such a versatile medium, and you’ve used it well here Julie… those trees are excellent!

This looks very pleasing and natural Julie, lovely work

It's stunning and I bet your Dad will be overjoyed. I, too, like nostalgia so am definitely with you on that point

It’s a beauty, the trees are superb, beautifully drawn.

Exceptional charcoal drawing Julie, very fine art work. I would be interested to know how you treat the wood panel before applying the charcoal?

Superb artwork, well done Julie.

Strong piece of charcoal work Julie.

Splendid work.

Great painting, Julie. Love the trees, so great in charcoal.

Thanks all for your kind comments. George i don't treat it - i put down some charcoal powder and then draw straight on, but I think it may already be treated (I use Jackson Art birch panels). I use fixative to fix the drawing (quite a few layers of it) and then I use a layer of museum grade cold wax to seal the surface - that needs to cure for about 48 hours but once it's cured you can buff it with a cloth and it means you don't need to frame behind glass.

Superb charcoal work Julie, it almost looks like an etching. Tree’s are fabulous!

Thanks for all that information Julie, I love the finished result.

Beautiful charcoal work in the trees - and a wonderful, thoughtful present for your Dad

This is quite a large (50 x 40 cm) charcoal drawing on wood panel. It's of the lane where my parents live and where I grew up and its actually intended to be a birthday present for my dad who turns 82 tomorrow. The lane and those trees are very familiar to me. Memory and nostalgia are themes running through a lot of my art. One of the things I like about charcoal is that it can look like an old-fashioned photograph and so, in many ways, it already evokes the feeling of memory.
