Australias Backyard by Karleen Pearce

The difficulty for someone who's never been to Australia in commenting on this is that the landscape (in this scene at least) is so alien - in places, it reminds me of Hieronymus Bosch. But then, that at least frees me to comment on just what I see in front of me - I like your bleak rocks, and the touches of shadow under the plants, which gives them lift & makes them sit more happily on the landscape. You were worrid about the purple flowers, I think.. but I think you've broken them up well, and I can see why you wouldn't have wanted to disrupt that thick white carpet. So, for me, an interesting picture of a landscape I've never seen, good colour, keep on doing what you're doing!

Thank you Robert and Alan for your comments, :) hmmm I hope you won't think I am ignorant Robert, but I had no idea who Hieronymus Bosch was until I read your comment and looked him up on google, I found his work to be most interesting and strange at the same time, yet I really liked it. Your comments have been a great help to me, thanks.

Thanks Phil, :) In each state of Australia the land can go from tropical, bush, desert, mountains and also have some wonderful sea scapes, its a wonderful country to live in, and its great to get knowledge of other countries through paintings.

A journey of discovery.... when we share this space with artists from all over the world. It is amazing to see landscape so different from ours, colours are a novelty. I like it very much.

Thank you Beatrice, I just love viewing all the other artist's work on this site, especialy the winter paintings with snow, as I have never seen it, not that we dont have snow here as well, just too far to go, one day:).

Hi Karleen this looks like the colours of the Pilbara region...I lived up there for five years and all of our clothes had a pink tinge to them but then we were all the same so it wasn't until we came to Perth that we realised how dirty our clothes looked....I really like this wonderful colours. Thanks for your comments on my latest effort...I'm determined to finish this class piece it's from a picture Tutor gave me but the green in the trees really do look like phthalo...I got carried away with the lovely colours of the acrylic ink...I hope by the time I get the foreground done it will fall into place...next time I have a go at it I will mix some burnt sienna and green ink and knock the tree colours back a bit...I can't resist bright colours

Hi Karleen so you are a West Aussie...I'm glad that someone else knows what I'm talking about when I talk of the colour of our clothes when we lived up there...yes hot indeed when we arrived there we scurried around like city folk but soon learnt to walk like the locals...slow with the heals dragging and on the shady side of the road...you asked about Australian Landscape Magazine...I saw it today and have noticed it before but havn't picked it up...today there was two in one packet so I couldn't see what was inside...it only cost $6.95...I shall buy it next week...August's Leisure Painter was in and it cost $12.70 so I couldn't bring myself to spend the extra money because Art Riot had a good sale on...I'll let you know what it's like now. Art Spectrum now have some smashing Australian watercolours now, greens, blues and lovely Flinders Blue Violet Red Hue and Blue Hue...they also have would you believe Pilbara Red which really is Pilbara red...they are developing more and it's about time I find Australian greens so difficult...they had them on sale today for $6.96 for all grades so I stocked up with my favourite colours...I find in class that I have been giving some of my friends squirts of the Flinders colours but I think they will have to start buying their own works out a bit expensive...thanks for your interest Karleen and keep in touch

Am fascinated to read this exchange of views, and do hope you have kept in touch with one another. It's great to find someone who knows what you are on about...lived in N. america years ago, and felt an alien when i communicated...or tried to....

Hi Ruth, it can be hard to communicate to others when living in differant Countries, Patsy sounds like such a lovely person, as does every one on here :) such a feindly site. So did you enjoy living in America? is the Country side as beautiful as it seems on TV and in pictures (mags and such).

Delicious!!! It reminds me of rich cream pouring among chocolate flakes. Love the surreal quality. I have always dreamed of visiting Australia, the land and people are truly incredible.

Thank you very much Rod :) I just picked it up today from a comp I entered it in, unfortunately no prize for it, but it was such fun to see my work hanging in a gallery that I really did not mind not having won a prize. Australia is def worth visiting, such a variety of everything here:) Great to receive your compliments.

Like the vibrant colours in this painting......reminds me of "PORT PIRIE" when i was in the merchant navy.
