Autumn , Bee Hill
"As the growing season winds on towards its close the countryside assumes a very restful phase, as though gathering itself for the winter ahead." This is what I wrote about this painting for an exhibition catalogue a couple of years ago. I was showing a body of work inspired by Beal, a tiny hamlet on the road to Lindisfarne, Northumberland. An experiment in mixed media, I was trying a very light application of oil pastel on heavily textured watercolour paper, as I had found I liked the beautiful soft and delicate effects which could be obtained with coloured crayon. Finding the result heavier than I wanted, however, I worked into my image with white gouache, obtaining quite a pleasing result.
