Good start, post the later stages whether it works or not (sure it will!). Promising beginning.

By the way, that's a fabulous blue - don't lose it, whatever else you do!

Looks like a very good start, it is very often inclement weather at Black Rock, will await with interest the finished piece.

I like this, great blending of colour.

Striking and very worthy in it's own right. I'd be more than happy to hang this one on my wall never mind the finished piece.

Thanks to everyone for our kind remarks. It's encouraging to say the least. I spent childhood holidays at the Black Rock and Criccieth areas. So the place has memories for me. Although I believe it's alive with jet-skis and sand sailors now! Ah well. to each their own! Regards John

John, Lovely to see your work in progress. I do like the colours you use. This looks like it is going to be smashing. PS I couldn't stop laughing on the comment re Tintagel Head - how we suffer for our art. I was very lucky, that view in particular I painted three times. The cottage had a wonderful garden and I sat just by the patio doors on the raised patio.

Black Rock Sands, under threatening weather. This WIP is in oil and is approx. 16" x 12" (40cm x 30cm). It is painted on Arches 300lb rough, glued to a 6mm MDF panel, and primed with acrylic primer. Tinted to blue/grey first, and then an under-painting in acrylic. (I use W&N colours; this a mix of Winton and Artists' quality. It is a preparatory study which, if it comes off, will be painted again, on a stretched linen canvas 20" x 18" (50cm x 40.5cm) .

I have painted most of my life. Childhood Christmases usually found a box of watercolours in my 'stocking'. I left school in 1954 and within 6 months I had enlisted in the Royal Navy, starting at the infamous HMS Ganges, near Shotley, Suffolk. Artists country yes, but no time for such things while…
