I would call it mixed media then John - A lovely painting beautiful sky - wonderful recession. Smashing waves, for me the Gouache makes it. Excellent.

Thank you Jeanette, Yes, you are correct. It is mixed-media. I got mixed up painting it too; I almost used Naples Yellow for the foam. Painted under flourescent lights! I am going to treat this as a trial for a half-imperial version. Thanks you again.

Lovely feeling of movement of the waves and the distant land with a misty effect, You can almost smell the salty sea air! SUPERB! nice one John.

This is a very nice seascape John, as Jeanette says, nice recession to the distant hills and the sea gulls add middle distant interest. well done.

I really like this. The light in the sky and the movement in the waves, so very well done. A lovely watercolour.

They will just have to cos the finished work is great - love it!

I love the sea mist on the horizon, so realistic, makes me feel like i'm there!

I absolutely agree with all of the previous comments. This seaskape has movement that you can almost feel! It's really very good, and anyway, isn't mixed media all the rage now? I love it.

I must thank everyone for the kind comments. I got particular enjoyment out of painting this one. So thanks again. Makes it all worth the time I spend. Regards and happy painting John

Superb painting John, I can never understand why watercolourists tend to look down on gouache, for me, it enhances the painting, especially when used to such good effect as in your painting. Carry on using it mate, it works well.

Thanks for your comments on Money for old Rope, much appreciated. Just been browsing the rest of your portfolio, all beautiful paintings especially your autumn scenes. Happy painting, regards Val.

Hi John, I was wondering about dipping into body colour. This is a very inspiring beautiful painting. Romantic era of Turner lives again! :) best wishes colleen

Thanks Colleen. That's very nice of you and I appreciate your comments. I used the body colour just for the foam and the gulls; applied with a No. 2 rigger, applied with the 'belley' of the brush. A little 'dry' brush too to get the traces of foam undr the wavews, and finished with some 'spatter', masking off the upper half of the picture.

Belley? Humph! Lol! Belly! John

Oooh, technique secrets! Still couldn't produce such a painting:) Many, many thanks John! Best wishes, colleen

I agree with all the above...I like the result...the important thing, not which medium to calassify it under...but then I'm no snob.

I have tried to do waves like this, now i know how to do it thanks to you , there's no stopping me now. "Cheers" Regards Max

Hi Max, Thanks for the comments. I am pleased to be able to help and I hope you get on well with it.. This study wasn't as large as I have worked and for these sea studies, I do work on large scale (say 1/2 imperial max) for the best effects. But Max; I hope you'll soon be tackling a full/imp. Happy New Year John

I Had to scroll through all the "Johns" to find you - search for a name didn't come up with anything. This sometimes seems to happen. I like this painting very much - sea-scapes certainly seem to do things for people.

I don't even know what 'gouache' is..but it works for me if that 's what brought these waves to life...crashing in my ears and I think I can also hear the gulls squealing too...is there not some idea of mixed media or something.. anyway...however you (I) look at this is stunning.....and i will be looking in on your other work too. Love it.

Belley! Oh dear.. Belies the fact I reelly can spel. honest! Lol!

Someone asked me at my art group... I use designers' white as gouache, as opposed to Chinese White watercolour. There are some colours we buy (such as Naples Yellow) which are quite useful as body colour when using gouache. If using body colour, Naples Yellow and Ultramarine make a satisfying sky-blue when mixed in the right proportions.)

Sea and Sky - Stepping away from 'pure' watercolour and using designers' white for the highlights. I hope the purists can forgive me this one foray.

I left school in 1954 and within 6 months I had enlisted in the Royal Navy, starting at the infamous HMS Ganges, near Shotley, Suffolk. Artists country yes, but no time for such things while…
