Super idea John and well depicted, my only gripe is that the tones are all similar from front to back of the scene,

A great painting John! Good composition, fantastic imagination and so much to look at. ,

This is so vibrant just like a carnival related painting should be, I take Derek's point about the tonal values all being the same from front to back though as well, but there is just so much going on in this it is fascinating to look at

Glad you all like it. On the tonal values issue - this is a painting done from an image in full daylight - so the colours and tonal values for the scene at night - lit by two street lamps and some lit windows, are all concocted . However , my experience/memory perception of an enclosed space like this little square, is that the impact of one, or in this case two (the second lamp is obscured by the main lamp in the middle ground) strong, warm, light sources actually does have the effect of producing a warm enclosed space of light, with the tonal values pretty much evened out around the space . Anyway that was my deliberate reason for employing the very even tonal value range within what I wanted to be felt by the observer as a warm, enclosed , inviting, friendly space.

A partly imagined, partly real, night time Venice Carnival street scene - with images drawn from a variety of sources. I am aiming to capture the surreal, dreamlike, theatre-set, quality of the backstreets of Venice at Carnival time - with the traditionally and not so traditionally, costumed revellers rubbing shoulders with the conventionally dressed tourists and residents. Acrylic on canvasboard. 695mm by 500mm.
