My First Go At Figure Painting

It's very difficult for an artist to assess their own work John. I do not feel it needs another brush stoke. The shapes and brush marks and style say it all.

Thanks Graham, your feedback is most appreciated. Personally I feel both hands but the right in particular need more shape and the colours are muddy and corpse like! I’ll tidy it up tomorrow- but I’m in agreement- there will be no huge change to the overall vibe. 👍🏼👍🏼

Yes you are right and one could pick out a number of things to correct, but I just felt it is a powerful image just as it is. With no huge changes to the overall vibe that will be spot on. I will look out for it.

Fabulous work John. Love the bold brushwork.

Much to like. The pose and your treatment of our left knee, ankle and foot give the feel of a puppet with some cut strings. Effective and unusual. Have fun taking it where you want, there's always more in your brush.

Don't touch it....lovely work!

So far, so good.

It is a fabulous first go and very accomplished and agree with all the comments

Cracking pose and lovely application of paint

Thank you so much Carole 😊 you’re always so supportive

I love your description Owen! Thank you 🙏🏼

Thank you Jo and thank you Kal, it’s always great to receive your comments 🙏🏼

Thanks so much Heather, it was such a change but in many ways, painting is painting and I feel inspired to paint new subjects 🤗😊

Martin you’re most kind, I kept to my usual way of painting I hope, just in a different subject. I loved the whole process and it was nice to be in my comfy studio for the whole experience 😊

You are such a good painter, I think you could paint anything and your style shines through. Lovely work. !

Can I ask John, how did you set this up?

Valerie, I'm so grateful to you! You have given me a lovely confidence boost to try new subjects - thank you :)

Hi Marjorie! Sure! This isn't painted from life unfortunately - I got a free stock photo from a website so there's no copyright issues. I printed the image and clipped it to my easel, used a very simple grid because my canvas (70 x 50 cm) and the printout were different ratios and basically just painted it. It's my usual, very limited palette... :)

For a first go at figure painting this is really good. The best thing about it for me is that it stays true to your individual style and the brushwork in some of your landscape pieces.

Thanks Bobbie and I'm relieved that comes across. Im trying to keep my identity as a painter while trying other subjects :)

Great work John, I really like it as it is, a striking painting.

Hi Russell and thank you for your encouragement, I won't add too much more, tiny hints on the hands and feet only ;)

Thanks John - yes, I certainly recognise your palette.

I think its brilliant. You've captured the light perfectly.

Thanks Gary! It was a very positive experience to change direction 😊👍🏼

Petra! 🙏🏼 thanks ☺️

This is really great. A difficult pose to paint but you have done it extremely well!

Aaaw Spencer! You’ve made my day 😊😊

In another life I was an NHS Physio so I thought I should try a figure instead of my usual landscape. This is unfinished- I only spent two or three hours on it and will go back to the hands and feet tomorrow
