This painting was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Club as part of a series of paintings for their dining-room that overlooks Green Park, London. For research I spent two days with the Band of the RAF College at Cranwell, sketching and photographing them. The flutist in this painting is wearing her service maternity uniform and a few days after I took her photograph during this rehearsal, she started her maternity leave and gave birth to twin girls. She has since returned to work.
