Many thanks David and Alan for your kind comments. (I recently read, in the Artist I think it was, that if a painting doesn't seem to be working, it's often that there's not enough tonal contrast, and I think this was the problem with my earlier version.)

Reworked and yes - it Works. Composition and palette spot on. You should feel good about this painting.
