I think the detail is pretty good Jenny, is it sharper lines or finer cuts you're after? I always admire your unique designs and the way you base most of them on the natural world....which I'm a big fan of.

This is so cute Jenny, I think you are so good at these prints.

This is so delightful, Jenny...love your designs!

It's another beauty Jenny be careful

Thanks very much Fiona, Carole and Chandra. (Fiona, it's both really, the white cut-out grasses appear 'blobby' at the ends - I can't get fine, sharper shapes when cutting out - if I'd been leaving the grasses black I could have cut into the shapes to get a more defined edge (like the markings on the frog) if that makes sense? It might just be the nature of the soft cut lino, but maybe I need a better set of cutting tools, I only bought a cheap set to get started. What sort do you use, and do use the traditional lino blocks?)

Thanks, Dennis!

I did the same Jenny, bought a cheap-ish kit to get started with. I have five cutting blades and a couple of them are narrow 'V' shaped blades that I can do fine grasses etc with (look in my 'Bit's and Bob's gallery at the lino cuts to see an example, is that what you mean) Do you use a frame to hold your block in place when cutting? An essential piece of equipment. I use both the soft and the traditional, I prefer the soft cut, saves the visits to A & E! lol Also you can use both sides if you don't cut too deeply! If I do use the traditional I put it on the stove to warm up, makes it easier. I'm only a novice myself Jenny but if I can be of any help, let me know.

Thanks, Fiona. Yes, I've got a cutting frame although don't always find I need it with the softcut lino - and like yourself I also use both sides of the lino. The only blade I use from my starter kit is the narrowest 'V' shaped one, but it doesn't give me lines as fine as those you've achieved on some of your linocuts - in particular a couple of your bird ones Jack and Woody. I hadn't realised you also use the soft cut blocks, so I should be able to get fine lines like yours - I think I probably need some finer cut blades. I believe Jacksons sell the blades individually so will have a look at what they've got - and In the meantime may just try one of the traditional blocks - thanks for the tip about heating it first!

Another simple linocut design. I'm finding it it difficult to get any real detail using the soft cut lino - will have to go back to the traditional lino block for the next one (and risk nicked fingers and a sprained wrist!)
