I just love these sort of experiments and this one really works - makes a good abstract

This really does work. Just shows what you can do when you stand back and let the paint work it's magic. Makes a super painting.

Lovely to see wc doing its own thing but you can still see the tree shape, often get this result from painting outdoors too and its so much fun but still skillfull

I love the tree, very loose and interesting to look at.

Great comments: I'm glad to know that other people like "playing" too, which can actually involve quite a lot of skill or knowledge, as you say Norah. In fact the artists I love to watch the most are both very knowledgeable, especially concerning the properties of watercolour : Ann Blockley and Shirley Trevenna, because they both have this sense of adventure, and like to break the rules of watercolour, and push the boundaries. It's great to have fun!

Superb Jacki. Deceptively simple and very evocative.

Oooh, this looks like you had a lot of fun!! One of the best paintings I've seen on the gallery for a while. This kind of 'simple' painting is often the hardest to achieve and this one works really well. I've just been re reading 'Realistic Abstracts' by Kees van Aalst and this painting wouldn't look out of place inside the cover........excellent work.

Brilliant. Thank you Alan - this is praise indeed, and much appreciated! Many thanks for your support and encouragement. Hope you have fun with your painting.

I've just had a lovely day playing around with very loose, very fast watercolour. Just letting the watercolour do what it does best and only just being in control. Here I've added a little Indian ink and granulated the watercolour. This is not a well thought-out sketch, but it is a wonderful exercise in exploiting (and learning about) the properties of water-based media and a good loosening up technique.
