Summer Shadows, Pen Y Ghent

Summer Shadows, Pen Y Ghent

I like this picture. The lane leads you right into the picture and to the iconic shape of Pen Y Ghent on the horizon. I also think you have done well with the range of greens in the fields - not always easy to get to look right. I just wonder about the distance of the rain cloud in the centre, it looks relatively close, by how dark the underside is, but there are no shadows on the ground to help place it. What do you think?

Cheers Crispian, yes I know what you mean, I was painting the sky from the attic window overlooking the hill, and a dark cloud scudded across the scene, and being in that frame of mind I threw it in the painting without a thought of the ramifications. However as the light is from roughly over your right shoulder, and there are so many false horizons it was difficult to place the shadow on the ground. I think with a bit more courage I may place in the shadow at a later stage.

WS Oil on canvas 24x18". Another biggie painted from one of the pochades and some photos of pen y ghent from crooks lane, Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Rather than rushing this one it was completed in about 3 or 4 sittings over a couple of weeks, and as projects go I quite enjoyed this one. Originally there was no one in the middle distance, and the painting looked lifeless, so with a burst of pink and blue on the path I threw my wife in, and I feel rather pleased with the addition, although compositionally not too convinced as it turned out she is dead-center. I guess this is what happens when you don't plan a painting and 'just go for it' as I have done here.
