‘Michelle, ma belle …’ by Spencer Lambeth-Angell
Continuing my Beatles theme is Michelle. It was written in 1965 and is credited to both Lennon and McCartney. It has its origins in the popularity of Parisian left-bank culture. McCartney had gone to a party where a man with a goatee beard and striped t-shirt was singing a French song. Paul soon wrote a farcical imitation to entertain his friends that involved French-sounding groaning instead of real words. McCartney asked a French teacher to come up with a French name and ‘Michelle, ma belle’, was born.
