Sanderlings at high tide
There’s a little spot on our beach - romantically positioned behind the sewage outfall pipe - that stays dry at the highest tide and is a refuge for little waders like these sanderling. They have a preen and a bit of a snooze until the tide goes out, but there’ll always be some keeping guard. They’re so small - about starling size - that people walk past and don’t even guess they’re there. They come every winter from the Arctic. Watercolour, 14x10". This painting won a St Cuthbert award at TALP 2020.
