David, lovely subject and nicely depicted but the barges don't look settled in the water, rather just stuck on top. I believe a fair amount of reflections and shadows with strong tones would improve it.

Thanks, Derek. That's how it was, the flat, even lighting producing no shadows but I agree the narrow boat's reflection could do with darkening to improve the picture.

After painting boats in Suffolk, I felt I should spend more time painting the boats we have locally, and they're narrow boats. I normally look for shadows to create interest in a picture but there's something about the stillness of a canal in the early morning that I hope I've conveyed in this painting.
