Looking in to your painting and reading your description David.... I was right there beside you. Beautiful light and shadow and I love the mix of warm colours in the nearest river bank.

Capture it you did - do like the looseness of this appealing painting

This is delightful. You have caught the light beautifully.

Curses - I'm working on something VERY similar, although mine is from the R Avon; and I'm using oil, as well - but happily I'm doing mine with a different technique: I just want you to know I wasn't copying you when I finish it and get round to posting! I like the light you've got here, it does speak of early morning.

Lovely light, beautiful painting

i dislike oil paint very much because it takes weeks and months to dry, :-p but you seem a very experienced painter from looking at this painting, and i like it :-) i like how you have created light in it :-) and the pathway

Your description of the moment and the painting work so well together and the painting is a beautiful memory of that time - I really like the gentle light and the reflections, not to mention the immediacy of the whole piece. I've just bought myself a pochade box and am looking forward to some trips out with it!

And it doesn't REALLY take months to dry - well, all right, it does; but only beneath the surface, one can still work on it. This however is plein air painting: should be surface dry in about a week.

Thank you for your kind comments. Rebecca, I would normally finish a little oil for this quickly in one go (alla prima) working wet in wet. Thus, the fact that oils do not dry rapidly (unlike acrylics) can be an advantage depending on your style of working. I like to work the buttery paint wet in wet without danger of fast drying so I prefer oils over acrylics.

A nice harmonious painting :)

Lovely colours, lovely light and altogether a charming painting.

Congratulations on this painting being chosen for one of the most viewed paintings of September :-)

i understand what you mean, but i prefer acrylics to oils because of the speed factor. I agree with you though, oil paint does have a lovely buttery consistency :-)

Really enjoying your body of work!Have realised how "tight' my work is getting since I've not been painting enough on site.U r inspiring me to get out more!

This is a 6x8 inch oil. It was painted using my little pochade box. It was very early morning of a beautiful day. The sun was just beginning to strengthen and the sunlight broke through the trees to lift the mist and dazzle the water. Early morning on days such as this have an extraordinary light which I tried to capture.
