Trees Karoborup Road
We live by the sea in Cornwall so are used to light and space but Australia is staggering. Distances are huge and the air so clear that perspective goes weird and there seems to be no middle ground. There is a camel farm on this road and it was the camels first caught my attention, so unexpected. Then the trees, the three thorn trees on the left each at a different stage of blossom so the colours were quite distinct, bent by the prevailing wind. In the distance the usual eucalypt., further back a range of hills. Paint dries fast in this climate so I did many sketches using gouache on a stretched paper I bought locally and working from them when I got back to the UK. This is the first painting I made when I got home. I had a long narrow canvas already prepared which seemed to suit. Hope to have conveyed the huge width of the country. Acrylic on canvas 30 x 90 cms.
