In the Midst of all the Grasses
Oil on canvas 60x50 cms 24x20inches. I painted this Alla Prima partly because with all the different green mixes, I didn’t want to lose track of them. The palette looked fairly chaotic towards the end! These trees grow in a small copse in our field. They are a mixture of native types, but in the background you can just see the twin trunks of a Sequoia [Giant Redwood] that I planted about 15yrs ago. The grasses in the painting spring up in a small clearing in the middle of the copse, and many small creatures and birds find a home there. We have many pigeons in Cambridgeshire, and they seem to making an appearance in most of my recent paintings , as they are here. I’m not especially fond of pigeons, but they do provide quite a reasonable compositional device...
