WATERCOLOUR ON BLACK

WATERCOLOUR ON BLACK

Wow, Charles, what a very original way of painting. Yes, it certainly works, but, no offense, would you still call this a watercolour? If you add some white to it and make your colours opaque, in my opinion, it is not a "watercolour painting" anymore. But, who am I to discuss this. It is just a stunning scenery again, lovely bright colours and I can see that you really had fun!

Very atmospheric, As I see it, if you use Watercolour straight out of the tube it is still watercolour.

It has worked Charles! That's an interesting technique that you've used.

It's stunning Charles, it really works !

I like the way you experiment Charles, who would think you could successfully paint in watercolour over a black surface. But you have and I like the result!

I agree with everyone. Beautiful painting Charles

I enjoy your experiments Charles, you are turning accepted teaching on its head by producing wonderful paintings by unconventional means , keep up the great work.

Really great as always - love the greens in this Charles. Like you I never ever use masking fluid although I do sometimes use gouche for the odd highlight. r

A really nice painting Charles with an interesting technique with watercolour to achieve such a fine result, you just keep producing these great pieces, the tones, composition and light in this one is great, almost missed this one when browsing , thanks for your comments on my own latest post and hope you also have a good New Year-- All the best.

What an innovative artist you are Charles, a very successful painting.

A great painting and quite a unique path getting there! Lovely.

Interesting method, great results with lovely warm light.

I've been looking forward to seeing this, since you posted elsewhere that you were painting in watercolour on black - and I'm not in any way disappointed. You've achieved a very distinctive look that I would think couldn't be got any other way. As to whether it's watercolour or not - well, Victorian painters would have been familiar with the technique, although I think few of them painted on black. Samuel Palmer used white with watercolour to create gouache, and a good many others used white/body colour quite often; in more modern times, Rowland Hilder used the technique - and came in for some criticism from the lovers of 'pure' watercolour, ie transparent washes, no white. This sort of thing will always divide opinion, but while I certainly do love transparent watercolour, and wouldn't wish to see it disappear, it's just one way of using the paint. What you always get in your paintings is a glow, an inner light - the painting can look dark at first glance, but it isn't; the longer you look, the more light there is: this is what makes your work particularly rewarding.

Absolutely stunning, Charles! The composition is really super here, and I love the way the trunks move the eye around.

I can't wait to try out this method of painting! I've painted on black backgrounds in acrylic and oils, but never even imagined doing it in w/c paints! Very exciting!

Painted on Bockingford 140lb rough 12"X8"------- When painting with watercolour I do not use masking fluid or gouache but I will make opaque colour from W/N titanium white or chinese white---- This painting was on watercolour paper --The paper was given two coates of waterproof black ink giving me a jet black ground to work on --The painting was then built up using glazes, layers and neat paint----- Had fun and I think it works
