I like the one on the brown base , the shadow on the side of Mollie seems to give the drawing form . I think the fur on both is very good .

You are right. Carolyn. The brown one is a beautiful, detailed drawing but the grey one equally beautiful, is more like the photo. There is nothing wrong with a bit of blurring and maybe sometimes we try too hard to achieve perfection. I know you love pastelmat but I have just submitted Belle on velour paper and it was a real pleasure to paint. Hardly any effort was needed for the fur and it is smashing paper to achieve a blurred effect. Tried this paper years ago and hated it but loved the experience of using it recently. If I was to hang Molly on the wall I would probably go for the grey one as it’s a tad more natural. Hope that helps Carolyn.

Thanks for your advice Carole. I have always used multi media or cheaper pastel paper but recently invested in Canson Mi-tientes and quite like it. Having looked at your painting of Belle it looks like velour covers better so I might have to give it a try. The painting is for my cousin and she prefers the one on grey too. Thanks again.

Yeah, agree with the above. The light brown base is warmer and the composition is also more centred.

Yes the warmer buff colour acts as a better contrast with Mollie. Nicely drawn Carolyn.

Thank you Alan. I hadn't thought about warm and cold backgrounds...looks like the brown is winning.

I think the grey background wins for me as the likeness is really good. They both look excellent though.

Thank you Margaret. It was no contest in the emd as my cousin had both of them !!

I like the grey one, maybe because it is my favourite colour of pastelmat. Your doggie pics are lovely.

Thank you Dorothy, you are very kind.

Having done the first on grey pastel paper I decided to try on a light brown. The reference photo as you can see is blurred. I have printed it roughly the same size as the drawings for your reference. Even when I enlarged each section on my tablet it didn't give much detail in all honesty. I would like advice as to which is preferred please and how I can improve fur using pastel . I think the grey looks more like the photo but the brown is a better drawing. Thanks for your time and help.
