Inspired by Portrait Artist of the Year on the Sky Arts channel, I made this oil pastel study of Lemn Sissay based on a photo in a recent issue of Country Living magazine. Earlier this year, I watched a TV documentary about Lemn's early years in foster care and his search for his biological mother, and I was struck by his strength and serenity. This is really a mixed media piece, as I used acrylic for the first background layer.
