Pastel on Canson mi-teints paper, 50x63cm. I did a series of pictures called "Rock Varnish" for my final year in the drawing class at BKO Art School in Overijse Belgium. The "varnish" is actually a bacteria growing on the rocks. It has a strongly contrasting colour to the rocks themselves, which prompted me to explore colour as well as different media in the pictures. The series was inspired by an article in New Scientist magazine, in which the writer discussed the growth of "rock varnish" on rocks on Mars, and speculated whether this was proof of a life-form on Mars.
