Pencil portrait

I can see the " real person" here, Angela. The mouth and nose are particularly good.

Certainly some good observation in this self portrait, a good effort indeed!

Thank you Marjorie, I found this pencil portrait in one of my folios as I have just launched out in pencil portraits again. At the time when I drew this was at Art College, and was very nervous as we were being mentored. The eyes express fear as I felt a bit self conscious as the tutor was there in the background, but he was a super Art tutor and I thoroughly enjoyed the course. Something about drawing in pencil I like and feel comfortable with but its all in black, white, and grey, yet it seems to bring myself into the here and now and centres the attention somehow so may launch out once again.

Thank you Dennis and Alan, I really did like drawing these pencil portraits but for quite a few years have delved into painting for illustration from imagination. Its really important to draw with pencil as a discipline and may start some more still-life drawing exercises. Now life is quieter and calmer again I need to launch out into drawing once again.

Well done, Angela - I've never done a self-portrait from a mirror, so I take my hat off to you!

Many thanks Jan, it was an exercise and needed to place the mirror at right angles on the easel which wobbled about at times, but did manage to draw the nose and mouth and can remember how afraid I was at the time, like stage fright! However, following this drawing we progressed to paint in oil portraiture, and it took ages as each time I sat my mood had changed like the weather then, lol! Yes, its a challenge but fascinating too, but I prefer pencil any day!

Pencil portraits help us to see the plateaus and ridges to form symmetry. I did this pencil drawing as a self portrait while gazing in a mirror and think its a good exercise to practice again.
