It is years since I made any of these, my children used to love them when they were young. I must look out the recipe and make them for my grandchildren. Scrumptious, the shortbread and the painting!

I call this recipe (which I have refined over many years - since about 1989) caramel shortbread, but things in a similar style are often known as millionaire's shortbread. There's a small tower of the things, so I applied the word "stack" to the latter description to come up with a slightly less prosaic name. So yes, it's homemade (and ridiculously moreish, albeit almost certainly very bad for you - and me). There are some left, but these particular ones were eaten as pudding yesterday evening.
