Lovely work Adele, I'd assumed it was watercolour. Just a point on scale, the man on the left looks very small compared to the lady in blue.

Good strong shapes in this piece Adele. Yes the figures do not seem to register correctly.

lovely feeling of light on the facade well painted Adele

Thanks Stephen, John and David. I agree with you both Stephen and John - however, I have looked at the original photo, which I put on the Forum (page 2), as I had asked for some advice, and the figures are that size. My husband is just looking over my shoulder and he thinks that was a young child in school uniform as a music school was attached to the Cathedral!

I like the colours in the castle Adele and the light under the arch is very nice.

Adele the building is very plastic, almost 3D, really good. The figures somehow do not cope with this. Without knowing the photo, I would suggest to add some shadowing.

sMASHING.

Thank you Carole, Holger and Russ. Holger, I'm not too sure what you mean - do you think I need shadow on the figures or building?

Nice work Adele, impressive building.

Very strong and striking.

Nice painting Adele , I like how you set the characters in front of the arch

Thank you Cesare, Shirley and Dennis. I think Holger might have been referring to the two figures not shadowed enough and I can see that now - will darken that slightly.

I do like to see figures in this type of subject. The left figure does appear out but maybe you copied the photo too well and it's a lad. The structure needs more random texture I think and be careful with the joints of stone.

Great stonework Adele, very nice indeed.

Well, this has turned out very well Adele, I do like it very much, great colours also, and not too much unnecessary detail which you initially threatened as I recall...

I like this Adele. I followed your dilemma on the forum. You made the right decision. I'd like to see it in watercolour, how about it?

Thanks Derek, Margaret, Alan and Ellen. Yes it was a lad Derek - Music School attached. Points noted about texture and joints, thanks for those tips. Took on board some of the forum comments Alan and simplified it. Also in an effort to loosen up I used a large brush and tidied up a little afterwards - had to keep slapping at my hand to stop me getting too tight! Ellen, that is such a challenge for me, my expertise with watercolour is just to add a fairly flat wash - hmm will think about that very seriously. Just have to say I appreciate all the help, tips and comments - this is a lovely website.

Lovely rendition of light, with great ambience, Adele.

Thank you Seok.

I'd put the original photo of this on the Forum for some advice as I was going to paint it as in Victorian times, however, I decided to leave as as apart from a few alterations. Open Acrylics.

About the Artist
Adele Elgood

When I was a young girl my parents had a large mirror which had an etching of a "crinoline lady" on. I would spend hours copying this. In the 1960's when I was at Secondary school, I was told to give up painting and drawing as I was useless and would never be any good. Following these words of…
