No one has said so far as I know 'don't use photographs'.  Many have said don't be a slave to them or try to copy them exactly. T'ain't the same thing at all.

This post has been removed as it violates our forum rules and guidelines.

I do agree with Robert and others on the use of photos, I would not be able to do the type of paintings I like to do without them. My prefer subjects are old ships , boats, tractors etc, and the scenes of them at work. I do use lots of photo and most of the ships ones come from a site dedicated to ships , I have asked and was granted permission to use the photos on side as I wanted . I always made significant changes to the scene and set ships etc into other scenes , I don’t reproduce the photo as it is unless I have been asked by the owner to do so. Use them but don’t reproduce them . A big thanks to Ships Nostalgia for a allowing me and to those on the site who have encouraged me when I have uploaded photos of the paintings .
Because of my style of painting, which I know some frown upon, I need a high res detailed image to work from. I’m not slavishly copying a single photograph as I normally modify the image in Photoshop first, comping separate images together and changing details to suit. Even if I was, why does that have to be an issue for some people? It does seem that for some it’s ‘there’s the right way, then there’s your way’...
In all the years that you’ve been posting Anth, I’ve never once read anything remotely derogatory said about your excellent work or working methods!
I think a previous poster was a tad cross... please don’t make me say “each to their own “  again..🙉
Is it possible to have this whole post deleted from start to finish.?  I do notice that one comment has already been removed. This site isnt about nastiness /anger and upset which has happened here . Life really is too short. I know .
I agree with Alan , I have never seen a bad comment made about you outstanding artwork Anth. I think people like it no matte4 how it’s achieved and I believe most people on the site know that some of us use photographs as reference material when painting. It matter not how its achieve unless it an out and out claim for work that’s not yours artists on this site like what they like and comment when they want to. We all have our method of working and that is the beauty of art so maybe we should just let it go and carry on posting our own work not matter how it’s achieved . I’m going to do what I alway do and hope you continue posting your work Anth as it’s a delight to see.  No Sylvia in not going to say it .
...not directly - feels more like guilt by association 😁 Anyhoo, life’s too short - sorry for moaning, I’ll try and keep a smiley face on 👍
I didn't see the bad-tempered comment - and it's gone now so I probably won't be able to.  Of course Anth's work HAS to depend on photographic references, in his case that's perfectly understandable - you can't get the level of detail he achieves without them.  I was commissioned to paint a couple of Ferraris - on the race track: of course I used photographs and all the other references I could put together: I didn't go to Monza to paint them in situ.   You use the tools you need for the job you're trying to do - if the use of photographic reference is decried, it's usually because, in portraiture and landscape, it IS a lot better (in some ways easier) to paint from a live model.  But that's ADVICE - not the Law and the Prophets - it isn't intended to be patronizing or dismissive.  And anyway, the quality of Anth's work speaks for itself.
() Crikey what a can of worms has been opened here, I didn’t see the deleted comment either. I think we just need to be aware that ‘advice’ given is a two edged sword and can sometimes return to stab us in the back. Its so easy to read into a written comment and colour it depending on the weather, or what we did or didn’t have for breakfast. I think we all post here because we want to belong to something we feel is worthwhile and of value to everyone,  something more altruistic than elitist. There are far too many over selective systems in the world without us adding to or bolstering them up.
Did I say something out of turn? I did mention that I use photos, I didn’t make any judgements about their use.  I’m all for exploiting any means possible to get the result that satisfies the end result. Isn’t that what artists have done for centuries. The reason I don’t use photo’s alone, is because I can’t, if I do, I just paint crap! Whereas, if I use them for an idea or guide, I can get away with painting fair to middling crap...... My apologies if my comment was the catalyst for the rest of the thread.
