I use photos, but more so these days, I really try to use my own, for works that I choose to paint for myself (not asked to paint). But I do envy those who can create something wonderful from their sketches, maybe glancing at a photo briefly, and from their memories, or even from just emotions.
I see my camera as a sketchbook I guess, collecting ideas. I do sketch a little.... but nothing of any substance, other than planning out a picture, or oddments of ideas, notes, smells, noises, or whatever.
I obviously use clients photos (for pet portraits - most of whom (the pet, that is), are deceased). Ocasionally they are still living!
But rather than 'just copying' the one photo, I ask them to send me numerous photos, so that I can get more of a sense of the animal than the one shot would provide. A photo is just a moment in time.
I've tried painting 'outside' before, but I just can't see.
Aside from my ever decreasing eyesight, the brightness (even on a dull day) makes my eyes sore, plus having to switch different glasses for long distance amd short distance, I just can't enjoy the experience.
I used to sketch a lot in my teens/twenties. Mainly on buses and trains.(sheltered!). More recently, I'm into doodling and patterns, zentangles, that kind of thing.

I so know that problem Helen though I still try to get outside ...well if the weather is reasonable . My eyes are a pain in the butt having had a macular occlusion some years ago, so I have frequent injections.. I know what you mean about lights and darks etc. But I will continue to try . Just looked at your pet pics they are a delight.

Looks like I missed the "interesting" post on here. Never mind, I could always show my idea of what a gold frame around someone's painting would look like to start another lively thread (a joke for those that know). Better not though. Re two wheels, last bike I had was a Norton Commando but that was a long time ago. Quite fancy another but SWMBO has put her foot down and banned me from going down that particular route, although my Porsche 911 makes up for it a bit!
