Iris is one of mm favourite flowers especially the big blues I know Sylvia lives them and indeed had just posted a superb painting of one. I stared this a few days ago and dabbled with it in between a couple of other paintings but decided to not rush it . I do like flowers and have done several different paintings in the past but was prompted to do this by finding a couple of old photos while upgrading my pad . The scene is made up from three different photos of different flower heads taken at different times. I prefer to start with a sketch so that I keep within the lines and choose to put a light was in the background to start with and darken as I want it . The first part was done over two days spending about half hour each time .

I really like how it's coming along, I'm very envious of people who can control watercolour like that.
Thank you Mark , watercolour is the only paint medium I use and I suppose I have become used to it and it’s odd ways that can still catch you out. I think flowers are a difficult subject to paint in any medium as the petals are so delicate and can soon loo to thick and ridged but it a nice subject as a challenge and develop skills that can be used in other areas.  This is the latest photo I won’t have the opportunity to do anything today but that suits me as I don’t want to rush it just to get it done. Sound silly but I really have to be in the mood to paint certain things.
Really delicate Paul, great job so far.
That makes perfect sense, I'm the same and need to be in the mood to paint - although sometimes I force myself to start and end up really enjoying the session. Yes, I always get confused with flowers - they just don't seem solid enough to paint somehow and I never know how to approach them (having said that, I have given myself a challenge to produce a whole series of still life paintings of flowers in vases! haha) Your paintings coming along nicely.
Worked beautifully
It's coming along beautifully Paul, very sensitively done.
Thank you all for your kind comments , very encouraging. I haven’t been able to do much this week with various appointments taking up most of the days I did fit in a forty five minute session this afternoon and added a bit more detail and colour . At that stage where I know I need to stop with the details and sort out a darker background, have darkened some areas near the main flower heads but not sure if it’s dark enough? . Have to be careful now is I’m a awful fiddler and get temped to just- well I think you know what I mean. Quandary is there enough detail , how dark do I go in the background, oooh will I come together I know it’s at that ugly stage and can go either way .
It’s beautiful at the moment Paul…I know the difficulties of finishing it off.
I agree! The second photo above has come out slightly darker so that would do for me, but which is right? I don’t think I’d do any more. It’s lovely as it is.
Thank you Marjorie and Tessa , I’m at the don’t want to do more and spoil it stage but my habit of fiddling is saying I need  to do more . The first photo was in better natural light and second was about four feet away on the easel so almost upright, I had noticed the slight difference Tessa and preferred the second photo . Still dithering but won’t do anything fir a day or so till lm sure of what I want to do.
