In the words of the radio show, I’m sorry I haven’t a clue on this one Lew! I even tried googling ‘painting of a policeman and man in top hat’ but nothing….good painting though (yours that is!). Someone will get it I’m sure.
I also did a search and came across a painting by Luke Fildes ‘Applicants for admission to a casual ward’ - a powerful painting highlighting the issue of poverty in Victorian times.
Spot on Jenny.  Didn't think it would take too long.  One of the more realistic paintings about Victorian poverty, as you say.  Quite loosely painted for a Victorian picture. Here it is...
Well done Jenny, and what a wonderful painting.
I hadn’t heard of Luke Fildes - this challenge Dawn has set us is proving both interesting  and educational!

Fabulous painting, I do like Victorian art and recommend a visit to the Lady Lever art gallery in Port Sunlight .
Well done Jenny. I wouldn’t have had a clue at either Russell’s or Lew’s, both superb examples. This one is perhaps fairly easy, I’ve done this section in pencil….I think it would have been quicker to do in paint!
Like Tessa, I googled 19C painting of policeman and man in a top hat. No luck either. Well done Jenny! Not easy at all, Fiona. I know who comes to mind but will have to do some research! ….yes, I was right, Picasso’s “ Guernica”.

You are too good at this Marjorie. Yes, Picasso’s “Guernica”, his reaction to the bombing of the place of the same name. I think the art quizzes we did from the Scottish National gallery during lock down, has paid off!

Fiona, I thought yours was a Picasso but hadn’t looked up which one it was.  This is from a less well known painting by a well known Post-Impressionist more recognised for his experimental use of colour.

Your information ref. experimental use of colour and post Impressionist artist was a good clue Jenny. Gauguin was one of the artists we briefly studied in last terms art class and I remember seeing this. I wouldn’t have guessed otherwise.
