Paul, how about Walter Spradbery?   He was a popular railway poster artist - his work was featured in one of the early Artist magazines and Dawn posted a review of the feature on POL a while ago.  I’ll keep looking, though!  (Another artist with a similar style was Frank Sherwin.)

Lewis, was your artist connected to the Arts and Crafts movement?

No Jenny it’s neither of them , I think everyone is concentrating on railway posters , he did some but not exclusively his painting were used in the carriages , those of us of a certain age will remember the landscapes etc in the old style carriage  He did a lot of work of paintings of his   home area East Anglia .
Lewis. I am thinking William Morris ? Probably totally wrong but his wife Jane was very talented in embroidery

Gillian and Jenny.  The artist was connected to the Arts and craft movement, but he's not William Morris.  It was his wife that mainly did the craft stuff with his help.  Their family life-style became one that people aspired to, and his paintings of it, mainly in pen and watercolour, very popular.  He's not British.
Ah, is it John Singer Sargent then?
I was going to Suggest John Singer Sargent but I don’t think he married

No Gillian, not Singer Sargent.  I'll leave it a little longer.
I don’t want to torment you to much , particularly Jenny who seem determined to find out . Here is approximately half of the painting , phew thought it had his signature for a moment.   .
I might be getting there - think the painting may be of Lowestoft Harbour.  If so, just need to find the painting to identify the artist - not having much luck the other way round!
