Lol…..you beat me to it Marjorie!  That was a tough one Frank, but I learned all about American Gothic art.

Glad that one’s now sorted.  Well done Marjorie - and Fiona!  I only got as far as the American Impressionists (but came across an American Contemporary Impressionist whose work I just love, so not time wasted!)  Not familiar with Grant Wood, will look him up.

At the very beginning I remembered Frank had mentioned Grant Wood when I posted Christina’s World by Wyeth so I suspected he might have chosen him. But I missed it early on and really went round the houses! Now on to Linda’s…tomorrow.
This thread just shows how little I/we know.  I thought I knew Grant Wood's work, because I like it, but indentifying an artist from tiny fragments is maybe too big an ask.  For me anyway.  Interesting though.
Tend to agree, Lewis, about trying to identify a painting from a very small fragment - based on Frank’s image I was looking for something bright and colourful and doubt I would ever have found it.  Still, am discovering some really interesting artists while looking.  Will miss this challenge when March comes!

I agree Jenny. This has been a good one. This has introduced me to some new artists, and paintings I wasn’t familiar with, and generally made me look more closely. Also when painting my own little samples, it has made me more aware of how the artist produced the work in the first place and I find that fascinating.  So thank you POL, apart from anything else this has helped me to get the paints out again and maybe to try different methods. 👍🏻
I think if everyone is enjoying it, there is no reason why it shouldn't continue, everyone is learning as they are going along and the banter is fun to watch.
Well done Marjorie 👏 I think it’s true that we have all learned a lot from this topic and got us really looking at other artist’s work other than those we usually stick to. Apart from American Gothic, looking at Grant Woods other work, I’ve noticed not only his immaculate neatness, but how he has built up the work with tiny patterns in a pointillist manner. If you head on over to Google Arts and Culture, either on the app or online, look at Parson Weems Fable. Google lets you zoom into the work with incredible detail, to see these patterns, brush strokes and varnish cracking etc, enlightening you to the astonishing way that the painting was produced. I promise not to do such a small “fragment” as Lewis calls it next time!
Ha ha, you’ve had your paintbrush slapped, Frank!
Thank you for the pointer to Google Arts and Craft,  Frank I have never used it before but will do now. Just had a quick glance , its very impressive,  another benefit of this thread we learn more than just about the artists. .
This is a really good thread.  I haven’t been quick enough to contribute much and there’re are lots of artists that I am not familiar with.   No Frank, it is not Mary Cassat, but you are close.  I’ll give you her first name is Mary.
An easy one for you all after Frank’s mind bender…..did I read that his paint brushes have been confiscated?! Lol My money is on Jenny to get in first on this one…..
