Carol (Jones) asked me whether my work has changed over the years. How about posting a really early piece alongside a recent one? Similar topics if possible.
Sounds a good idea Marjorie, I will need to dig something out from the heap of saved work .
This will be interesting Marjorie.
Nice idea. Only real problem for me is a combination of age and arthritis. This and attitude of course; I  might be actually beginning to understand Vincent. (-: ....I'll give it a look.
Two below, both from life ( me through the mirror). Husband is about 32 years ago when I first started to use pastel. I had no really soft pastels and the result is like a pencil drawing. Now I lay the pastel on much more thickly, with less detail. It was still a likeness of him though.
You've beat me to it, Marjorie :) You can definitely see the difference in the softness. Looking at the construction of both paintings the confidence of laying down the medium is still evident after all these years.

I think it’s a charcoal…husband was in his thirties. Recent one, much stronger.
You were and still are a very good artist, Marjorie. You're not afraid to use the darker end of the tonal scale. I'll have a rummage through my folders tomorrow. Most of my earlier work hasn't been photographed and put into my P.C. file.
You can see the undertones and the soft blending in areas of your recent pastels compared with the older one. You can clearly understand light and place it delicately in all the right areas. The charcoal is much stronger and complete, much more depth and volume.
I was thinking about the difference. Now I’m not “ afraid” of the medium. Years ago I was tentative and feeling my way.
Hmm… undoubtedly a good artist even way back, which is not a surprise to me. You started off with a good understanding of line and tone in particular, but your proportions were also pretty good…
Finally, because I’m hogging the topic…two charcoals from life. One is of my son about 42 years ago, the other is my daughter’s dog. I can see how my recent sketch is much more simplified - you don’t need a lot of detail to press the point. Looking at David’s shoes, do you remember the name of those very soft leather shoes with a double seam at the back?
