Did they call them polyvelts.
Yes! Thank you Denise! I’ve been wracking my brains, I knew they had something to do with South Africa, the soft leather like buckskin. He’s wearing a pair.
Sandra, you were asking about pokerwork - this is the pokerwork bowl in my painting.
Then - This was my 1973 mock O-Level submission entitled 'Children's Party': and I did this one last year:

Your mock O-level was very good Andrew, especially your humour. Did you get a comment about that?

Yes Marjorie, I was told that the actual O-Level examiners wouldn't appreciate it. I can't remember what I submitted for that actual exam but I did get a pass.  😁
My ‘then’ painting doesn’t go back nearly as far as those of Marjorie and Andrew, but this was my first watercolour of a local scene I’ve painted many times since -  using tissue paper stuck on for texture.   and a much more recent one in the illustrative style I’ve gradually grown into..   I did, though, keep this one unfinished painting from my school art class - not sure why, I hated still life and it’s pretty awful.

I must admit Jenny I don’t associate you with watercolour now but certainly with the second eg. Why did you change direction?  Just seen your third one…I can see why it put you off Still Life. Did the teacher set that up?

This is an early pastel of my husband and our dog, Harry. As you can see the pastel is very thinly applied. Done in 2000.
I don’t actually know, Marjorie, it wasn’t a conscious decision, just something I gradually fell into, and I find it hard now to paint any other way - it’s a very convenient way to paint, though - rather like ‘painting by numbers’ which I can do a bit at a time!   (And yes, my teacher set up that still life!) Love the pastel with your happy looking dog.

Whether the examiners would be a bit offish about the subject matter, your work is very accomplished, Andrew. I like both water colours, Jenny, however I do prefer your illustrative style, which we have all come to know as your signature. Like the pastel work, Marjorie.
I liked painting houses in my early years - The first is the Mill at St Fagans open air museum, Cardiff. It was painted 2005
