I just thought I'd give it a try, on a whim really as I'm stuck indoors due to the damn awful weather.  I've put on fifteen quite varied pictures, now I'll sit back and see what happens. It doesn't cost anything to open an account and list your stuff so there's nothing lost other than a bit of time.  As you say Tony, the problem is getting seen as there is so much stuff on there.
Well, it’s like anything, if you want success, in whatever field you choose, you have to get off your comfy arm chair, get yourself out there and put in the hard yards! Nobody is going to come to you… that’s a certain fact! I’m finding gallery sales slow at the moment, have been for some time, but they, as Robert has said, do much of the sales work and distribution for you… yes, at a premium I suppose, but they have vast overheads! I’ve just had a quick count and I’ve got somewhere in the region of 30 oils on stretched canvas, some landscape, some industrial scenes! These don’t require frames! They are 24 x 30in on W&N quality canvas. So quite large and would require buying art boxes to post them in. I’ll give it a thought when I’ve got more time and nothing else going on. I do agree with Tony here, a very disorganised website in the main… has it deterred me? Possibly… I’ve been looking at the Artist & Illustrator website, was called Portfolio, now British Art Club - I was a member a few years back and did have a modicum of success with sales. I also picked up a lucrative commission from a London based company! It’s £2.49 a month or pay an annual fee. No commission on sales… But, we also have the painters-online Studio, free to offer your gallery work for sale for subscribed members, and again, zero commission!
I think it's just a case of trying all sort and seeing what works.
Out of interest Peter, what are you listed as on Etsy? I just tried to find you without success.
Heh - if Tessa was actually looking for Peter and couldn't find him, it doesn't offer much hope to those who might rely on the casual visitor.  Though maybe they just aren't visible on the site yet.  I did try a paid-for online gallery - Affordable British Art; I feel a sense of déja parler here, sure I've said this before - but while I had no success there at all (and there was a huge rate of churn) I did help someone else get sales, by suggesting she treble her asking price.....  a point worth making again, because while staggeringly high pricing won't work for most of us (have you seen Damien Hirst's giclée prints on aluminium composite?  Priced into the thousands?) keeping your prices stupidly low puts off just as many people, who assume you have no confidence in your work's value, so why should they? (Please don't indulge me by going all Open Season on Hirst - it's just not worth it!)
In my local town we have two shopping 'malls' one much older than the other.  As you can imagine, many shops have closed.  A group of local artists, (or a group of groups) now put on temporary exhibitions in one or other of the empty premises.  I presume they pay a peppercorn rent, or maybe none at all. But they have a varied audience, just shoppers (most of whom are not painters) Each artist has to commit to helping out in the pop-up shop, so overheads are low. I think it works well as the mall also gains by having an attractive 'shop' thus making it more of a destination.
That had a similar thing happened in Hemel Hempstead that ran for a couple of years . It was really good to visit and chat with some of the artists .
I take your point Robert regarding selling too cheaply! And I agree in the main… But, I don’t think art buyers browsing on Etsy, to name just one platform, eBay would be another, would give that notion a second thought like we artists do, they don’t think like that It’s about price!
I couldn't use my name (too many Peter Smiths out there) so I'm 'meltonpaintings' Tessa.  Norrette, we're doing the same in Melton in an arcade, it's not costing us anything and it brings life back to all the closed shops. Since November we've sold 104 pictures!
Aha, found you Peter! You have a good selection there. Hope you do well. Keep us posted.
Thanks Tessa. I've posted sixty pictures which should be enough for people to have a look at. I've been registered for under twenty four hours and I've already had three scam e-mails which I've had to report. It could be an interesting experience!
Oh no! Well keep us posted. 🤞
