AND another thing....I know a lot of you do....but I don’t understand why if you comment on someone’s work they can’t be bothered acknowledging your comment.  I know I’m getting grumpier as I get older.
I always try and comment on comments and do so whenever I post a new painting.  I admit I'm less good when I occasionally get a comment on an older painting.  But tell me, how do you know if someone has thanked you unless you've gone back in to re-look at the painting you commented on?
I thought notification came via the speech bubbles, mine seem to! I could be wrong... Yes Sylvia, it’s all take and no give with some people, I do always try and thank everyone, although not always individually. And, I’ve regularly commented on the same artists work and never had a comment back on my own stuff from them, not that it’s the reason I made the comment, but it’s often all one way traffic.

Not for me - I make  comments but I never see if anyone has thanked me unless I go back into their painting I commented on.   Doesn't bother me but it is always nice to see see it when I occasionally do go back to a painting I've made a comment on
No you’re right, it doesn’t actually alert you Heather, I was thinking about comments made on your own postings, then these speech bubbles let you know. You just have to return and check!
Agree with Sylvia about people not bothering to acknowledge comments, it doesn’t take much to say thank you and it doesn’t have to be for every individual comment. There are one or two fairly regular contributors whose work I really like but they never acknowledge comments from anyone (or comment on anyone else’s work) so I’ve stopped commenting on theirs.  It seems a shame that people post work on a friendly site like POL and don’t take part in the community spirit.

I don’t go back on a regular basis Heather... sounds like policing.  Have commented on some new people’s work over the last  few days. I did go and look hoping they would have  responded. They hadn’t.it is a two way street as Alan  says and it promotes friendship.  My reaction is...I won’t bother again. I know you take a lot of time and trouble making comments it is kind of you and I’m sure most people really appreciate them. I think you are nicer than me .  I mentally think “ up yours “ beware...lol.
Sylvia I’m shocked, oh no I’m not I agree I tend to comment but then give a miss if they never respond. Sounds a bit childish I suppose, but like a lot of people it’s just been polite . At the same time I very rarely comment on works that are for sale, unless I particularly like it. Maybe it my age or I’m just a stroppy old sod.
I agree Paul, I rarely comment on paintings for sale and I’m really not sure why. With this comment thing, to start with I didn’t reply because it seemed like I was bumping up my own number of comments ( look at me , I got x number of comments) and wasn’t quite sure what to do, but I then realised it was the done thing. Also, being an amateur pleasure painter I feel nervous of commenting on professional work because I don’t have the knowledge or vocabulary so an anonymous ‘like’ will do.
Good idea Katy. Though if I like a painting I say why I like it doesn’t matter if the artist is a professional or like me a rank amateur .  Lots of us on here . People do enjoy comments I know I do.  So why not. .
Hi just been reading the thread. I only have a few pictures on the gallery and only just getting to grips with it!! So been quite lax about describing art work I am posting as didn’t know what info to put, but having read these comments it has given me guidance! Thanks guys!
It’s just good to know size and medium.  .
