A cruel tongue, that Sylvia. But unfortunately all too accurate in its comments....
The painting is without doubt a lovely thing, and Tessa has raised a point about our pensions that I hadn't really thought through .... truth to tell, I don't care all that much about stellar values unless we take the case of someone like Vincent van Gogh, who sold virtually nothing in his career and died depending on the support of his brother and others who came to his aid: his work now raises millions, if not more - despite the fact that he could only afford pigments which faded or turned brown very often, to the great detriment of his sunflower paintings.... if collectors had coughed up a bit of cash at the time, the paintings would be in better condition than they are for collectors today; which is, at least, ironic.
This is why some of us say - buy art by today's artists; invest in a genuine Bickley, or Sylvia Evans, while you have the chance to do them some good! It's too late to help Klimt, Modigliani, Monet, Rénoir, van Gogh, but it's not too late to help those of us slaving in our garrets (I'm sure Alan and Sylvia have very nice garrets!) today.
