A useful tip, JG, and thank you for it.
Would you believe that some art critics don't value Ken Howard at all? Well, I expect you would, knowing, as we all do, how valueless so much art criticism is. I think we should make greater efforts to challenge them - even though we'll be damned ourselves as meretricious artists who have never ventured beyond Impressionism (yup: that's what they tend to say). They understand NOTHING - and almost none of them could paint so much as a temporary road-sign.
On the one hand, you want to ignore them; on another - we can't really..... these desiccated academics inform so much art appreciation, and their baleful influence looms over art education - criticism doesn't matter in itself, but education does.

A truly fabulous painter, and his DVD’s are an inspiration… we lost Ken in 2022, along with Fred Cuming, another wonderful painter, also with some great DVD’s to view.
And, we shouldn’t forget another talented painter, also a great loss to the art world, I’m referring to Bernard Dunstan who died in 2017!
All Royal Academicians of course, you can’t replace talent like this so easily!
Footnote: all three were well into their late 80’s and 90’s…I’m not sure what that tells us but it’s encouraging!

For myself art is what you do and not what you talk about. But I have always thought that Impressionism was or is the panicle of painting, it’s certainly the most popular amongst people as far as I know. No matter what you paint or how you paint the essence is to capture the spirit of the subject and that is very difficult. Keep practicing that’s the way. Popular art is about the latest fashion and how it should be done, thats my view. Artist see and observe, critics judge.

I read the Guardian - yet find it less and less a welcoming place. Critic-idiocy is not limited to that paper, but you can find the worst of it there. Eg - a comment (not by their resident critics) the other day: "art should be about confounding expectations" ... hmmm. Well, OK. But then "art should challenge us, discomfort us.." - well: should it? These are big - and daft - generalizations. There's plenty of great art, in my book, which doesn't discomfort me at all, nor does it especially challenge me, as a viewer at least. It would be good if some would realize that "art should be" this, that, or the other thing, is a meaningless sentiment.
Anyway, I don't suppose it bothered Ken Howard - I certainly hope it didn't.

Art is something that artists do; make create or express in some medium or other, and the rest tell them how it should be done.
The term "expert" should never be used describing people who just pass opinions. Being able to recite "The Green eye of the Little Yellow God" from memory doesn't make me a poet, just a parrot.
Er, Amen. (-:
