Paul, good question. So far it's changing my head more than my brushwork. I don't erase any more for various reasons, which is liberating. Trusting the sketching process and enjoying the result rather than needing a pretty picture. I managed my first 10 mins of this attitude painting last night before sliding back. That's good though!
Marjorie. I can understand that. I'm keeping sketching for the short breaks or when I've fallen out with a painting session. How do you measure sketch Vs drawing? I'm not picking a fight, I'm honestly interested. Is it time, finish, purpose?

A sketch set up for a painting I’m working on it’s an imaginary scene using reference photos for the ship and tugs . The owl is white gel pen and pastel for the eye, the inspiration came from a photograph taken at night that I tweaked and then reduced the amount of feathers that caught the light .

Owen, my understanding is that a sketch is maybe just that - “ sketchy”, done quickly, not too many details, something to be used for eg. as plan for further work. Of course it can stand alone as a quick aide memoire. A drawing to me is more detailed, a work in itself. I confess I find myself becoming absorbed and mostly end up with “ drawings”.
