Saw a picture in LP today of poppies on black paper . So here’s a version in acrylics on multi media paper. Just a quick experiment to see the effect (a bit like a sketch in acrylic) !
Very effective Gillian, I’m not sure why we don’t use a black surface more often!
Depends on what you're using it with: works well with pastels, chalks etc, but there was a vogue for canvas panels for oil painting primed with black acrylic - not a good idea with oil paint, which over many years becomes somewhat more transparent.  You can clean the surface of oil paintings, but if later darkening is caused by black priming, there's nothing to be done about it.
I can see that black canvas for oils would be a step too far, but I have used black mount board for gouache painting, and was happy with the result. As you say it depends on the surface and the medium. Here’s a sketch done today with Fude fountain pen and coloured pencils .
Beautiful poppies Gill , excellent sketch Tessa. I was writing a letter last evening and always use a fountain pen next thing I’m doodling with it . I know several people use pen and ink , it was actually very enjoyable reminded me of doodling in my school books .  U
Superior doodles Paul!!
Hi again, you all have been producing some great sketches.  Here is the first attempt at a commission subject, after 6 attempts I have put the final painting in the gallery.
Good doodling Dixie, love the rhino! Good to see you posting Alan. My hubby goes beating so that’s a familiar sight!
Very nice, Alan. I like the trees in the background, subtle.
Lovely sketch, Tessa. Ideal post for the weather we are having.
A very effective piece of work, Gillian. Gouache works very well, also, on a black surface.
Nice one Alan! Another Orkney building from me today. Tormiston mill will Maeshowe Cairn in the background
