What a lot of lovely waffle going on here great terminology Denise.  Plus I like your kind train of thought Denise. I went to an exhibition of her work in Tate modern some years ago,I had to go and see that unmade bed.  This was long before her  diagnosis re cancer.. her work’ was being exploited just as much then.  I have never been a fan either of her or her work and have heard  her being  interviewed incredulously over time.  Paul a great idea to have it auctioned for cancer research. And pigs might fly. 
Sylvia I remember the programme about art students who did not have a clue about life drawing - wasn’t it Tracy Emin who criticised them for this?  But, my memory might be wrong.
I like most of Tracey Emin's work - and my first art tutor was a real fan!   I'm not thinking about things like the unmade bed - but I went to see some of her work with fabric when they had a few items on display at the Greyfriars National Trust property in Worcester a few years ago which really made me think. I wish my own art would develop in more of an abstract exciting direction!
Hi all So 'what is art'. Frankly, I don't know. A couple of years ago at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, I saw a painting across the room consisting of a large white canvas with some red streaks. I immediately liked it and was drawn to it. Getting closer I saw it was by Tracy E. I was amazed as I had always thought of her art as worthless. I still suffer from this inner conflict!

I find the most annoying saying by the so called experts is if it had the right signature you could add a couple of zeros. If you like a painting does it matter who painted it..  this is one I did earlier..
.  That old haywain keeps appearing Bari.  Yes it is interesting to hear others points of view  ,this is turning into an interesting discussion…thank you Tracy… though I still don’t like your work..

This is a good thread…..you started something Sylvia. Just to go off piste slightly, Turner and Monet’s work in the beginning was talked about, as not being proper art. Two of my favourite masters, along with Vincent and Lowry. Getting back to present day artist’s, I like Grayson Perry’s work. I know from talking to my granddaughter, art college students are being encouraged to think outside the box.
I don't like Grayson Perry's work or persona - but then: it doesn't really matter, does it? It's not the work that's the problem in Emin's case, but the absurd price-tag: the quality of her work is another discussion altogether.  Trouble is, the money gets in the way - if the price is the first thing you see, and the artwork second, I just think there's a fundamental problem with both. 
I agree about the price tag, Robert. It’s insane.
The next up and coming way of making money appears to be creating digital "art" and selling it for millions as a non-fungible token.  If someone could explain this concept in simple terms and how it can be done I'm sure we will all be very grateful  - just thought I'd throw this in to provoke more comment!
It's interesting that the main point here isn't that any-one considers Emin's work to be bad art, even if we don't like it I doubt any of us would wish to see 'art' being regulated within strictly defined boundaries.  No the issue is the amount of money people will pay for certain works, or rather works by certain artists.  As some-one said the name becomes more important than the work.  I wonder if that niggles us because the end result is that once famous, if judged by the auction prices, you can never had a bad piece of work.  And that niggles us because it strikes us as unfair.  Unfair because we all have days when we look at a piece of our own work and think 'Nah, that's awful.'
