That comment of Roberts re plummeting values had also crossed my mind. . I, like you Heather, like a lot of modern work it is Emins specifically  on this occasion.
I think Sylvia, I will paint a line in neon green and title it Strand Of Axon, yes, that sounds pretty meaningful and deep, I'll put a £40,000 price tag on, should do well. 😁. Love the painting of Sam looking in the mirror.
Do it Denise…you never know.
Many many years ago I watched a telly programme, where they got some non-artisty people (kids or teenagers I think it was) to basically throw paint on some large canvasses and walk or ride their bikes over them. Took them all of a few minutes to create. Then they pretended they were by some up and coming artist, created some exclusive exhibition, put massive price tags on them, invited various wealthy know-alls (or know-naff-alls), and filmed their comments... That's how much of the wider art world is, in my opinion. People with lots of money, who have absolutely no idea about art, they just want to buy stuff, and people who create that 'art' knowing exactly how to exploit that market.
I tell myself I wouldn't want idiots' money anyway (a rather obvious lie) but also that I don't want to become an artist whose name is more bankable than his work.   I doubt there's much chance of that, to be honest.  But all the same - I would just hate that level of exposure: you'd always be thinking of the money; and while one might fool oneself that the expensive dross would leave one time for one's REAL work - I just doubt it would.  Once an appetite for easy money has been established, it has to be kept fed - at which point, it takes over.   Obscurity has its virtues.
Very well said Robert
Bonhams posted on Instagram this morning, so I clicked on Tracey Emin’s Instagram page. I have to hold my hand up and say, I do like some of her work! I think this particular one is part of her feelings and recovery after battling cancer….there are quite a few similar ones.  People with money will always buy a name.
I must admit, I have not looked at her work but I will take a look. It is terrible when someone is battling something awful and it's good, it can be expressed through art. This particular piece, I feel the public are being overcharged and taken for a bit of a ride but I'm a novice at this art stuff, so what do I really know anyway. That's just how I feel about this particular piece Sylvia has put up.
I don't think deeply often but believe it or not, deep thinking comes to me on a rare occasion. I've looked at the painting again and thought about what Ellen has put about the artists recovery fron cancer. The painting looks like no real care or thought has been attached to it but then I thought, is this what the artist wants us to think. Is it that, when you are battling life and death, art and everything else becomes unimportant and it's only human essence that matters. Now I have thought about this, I do see the painting in a different light. It's not about the image before us, it's something much more that runs through the core of someone's deepest feelings. I know you might think it's waffle because what do I know but it has really made me think about this piece of art and the reasons behind it. Waffle finished now.
It’s the price that disgusts a bit…for ordinary people it may take away what she is trying to convey. But ever since the likes of Damian Hirst and Saatchi etc the inflation of prices and “ silly money” is here to stay and will probably get worse. Not by any means just in the Art World.
Yes, I agree Marjorie, the price is beyond reason without a doubt.
Some folks have more  money than they know what to do with it. Spend it on silly things , sometimes invest it as a tax saver etc. Unfortunately if it has a name that’s well known on it , it will sell very quickly no matter what it is or how good it is. And of course they are those who just want to own a  thing , done by some famous . I would bet that someone you’d by a full chamber pot if it had been filled by a so call celeb or a royal. It’s very sad the the lady has cancer and I can understand her using her art to express how she feels , but that aside what a silly price , of course it could be given to a cancer charity.  I don’t think we would be as shocked if it was auctioned off and raised that amount of money for cancer research etc, still it does not make it a good piece of art .
