A unique, mysterious, unrecognised, unidentified painting I invite readers to help solve the painting's mystery and offer up to a £1000 reward on a first come basis to anyone who can offer convincing evidence to answer my questions. The whole story can be read at www.oldmasterdetective.com but your comments would be welcome below. Thank you
Well theres exciting . I like the pic a lot.....and an interesting dialogue.
What an interesting Website! Well worth a visit. I have added my tuppence ha'penny worth, no doubt, far from the truth but great fun all the same. Sarah
Your £1,000 is, sadly, safe from me. If I had to guess it would have something to do with the Holy Roman Empire, but the last time I learned about that being over 50 years ago, that's not so much knowledge as sticking a pin in the earth hoping to hit oil. There seems to be a tension between the sombrely-clad group on the right, and that on the left, with the figure in the middle torn between them - but who he might be, and who they are, other than that one on the right is dressed in the robes of a scholar, I have little or more honestly NO idea. (Or if I have an idea, I'm embarrassed to put it forward because it's probably totally wrong.)
The dialogue is - "and furthermore thy knees knobble"! And that's an apology from me too - looks like I won't be spending that £1000 in the sweetie shop!
I can assure you it's a real website! thanks for all your comments so far. I am the web designer - promoting the website on behalf of a client who owns the painting and is dying to know more about it as he's had it for so many years! Please feel free to pass onto family and friends and anyone else you think would find it interesting. Thanks
It's unlikely that any of us on here will recognise it from a photograph, if your client wants more information there are plenty of places to take the piece and get an accurate appraisal, namely the major auction houses where there are teams of experts who do this sort of thing for a living.
True in most cases Alan, but the owner of the painting has gone down that route to multiple experts and houses, over a course of 30 years. The painting truly is a mystery and the story on the website is well worth a read which is why I thought I'd share it with you guys (I Google searched for art identification forums). Regards Rich
Having taken some time to read the website I have become quite intrigued and whatever the outcome (indeed if ever there is one) I do hope this forum will be kept updated.

Of course, Michael. Glad you enjoyed it.
Are a lot of people deliberately pretending to ignore a very obvious fact about the gentleman with the bunch of leeks? Close up examination of his pink knickerbockers makes it appear that the artist might just be taking the mickey somewhat? Or is it just me.....?? (-:
Didn't know 'us lot' were so inventive! This is greatly entertaining. I fear though, Sylvia, that the Dyke did not work! Apologies to our Welsh friends.
