Getting better every day Gill .
Gillian, I signed up for Raw Umber's news letter, it's free and I was sent 7 videos. I got some more free videos yesterday. they also run free portrait sessions with a live model some Sundays. I haven't yet but you can pay a small fee for the use of all their sessions and access to all their models. Here is a portrait I've just done from one of the videos they sent. It's an hour long. I watched it first, taking it all in. Then sketched it along with the video. I made some changes as the model had a hair band that I didn't like and I put a bit more detail in the face but definitely great practice in graduation and soft and hard edges.
Gillian -the more you do, the better you get; progress can be tantalizingly slow, I know: but neither falter nor fear!  Just keep going, you're getting much better at proportion and overall shape in your portraits.  (This is as much advice to myself as anyone else: I do get nervous about approaching portraiture - it's that blessed likeness problem that plagues me!)
As Robert has said Gillian, you are improving all the time and practice is the key. I've been practicing for nearly three years on and off with this subject, so, just keep at it.
Thanks Paul, Robert and Denise for comments and advice. I am beginning to feel more comfortable sketching/drawing portraits and figures which is down to the practice. I will look into signing up for that newsletter Denise, I am impressed by the portrait you have posted
Onwards and upwards Gillian your sketches are getting better day by day.  Denise I really like your portrait is this charcoal? I’ve been playing with khaki rag paper.  This is a little pen and wash.
Lovely flowers Hilary that paper has a very ex dive sounding name! Do you like the results it gives?  Another charcoal sketch from me!
Hilary  it's lovely to find another flower lady, I can't resist then, nicely done. And Gillian you are leaping and bounding....  brilliant.
Lovely Hilary and looking good Gillian. I've done a Plein air sketch today, a bit of charcoal and blending stump. I was near a hilly village and there was nowhere to stop the car on the country road, so I pulled in by a gate next to this field to sketch. It took about 20 minutes because I didn't want to stay on the road long.
A superb sketch Denise.

It should have read Khadi but silly spell check altered it 😂 yes it takes a lot of water but it has a very rough surface so more suited to landscape or seascapes I think
