Thanks for that Tony.  Would be good to have an avatar (I think) but my pic is a self portrait … before I had my tuition needless to say!  Anyway, I can definitely vouch for the New Art School in Lewes (well, one of the painters anyway).  Having seen what short courses are currently on offer am seriously tempted to go to one.   Anyone else interested?   Am rather scared of a 'masterclass'!
Me again.  Clearly have a headcold or something (senior moment may be) … clearly what we chose to have as our photo is an avatar!   So, yes, I have one, like all of us do.
JUST to be clear, then - your avatar, i.e. the thumbnail portrait with which you adorn your posts, IS a painted self-portrait?  Even being partially blind in one eye, I thought it was ..... but should welcome the confirmation.  And if it is: you've cracked portraiture.
For the avoidance of doubt, I do not think that the NewArt school is a scam. It just annoys me that people think the forum is there to give them free advertising. The clue is in the word, try looking it up in a dictionary.
A forum is a place where ideas can be put forward and debated/discussed. We have been discussing the pros and cons and the possibilities and limitations etc of online learning. Therefore, I’d say it was doing it’s job. The fact that many of your members have joined the NAS reveals that there is interest amongst your group. Join the NAS today and we can provide you with a 20% discount code for CASS Art with free UK delivery.
You get free delivery from Cass Art if you spend £40. OK, Al - there are shedloads of free online learning resources; what makes yours better than any of the others?
Yes but not 20% off. The mentors are internationally recognised artists. They are generous and passionate about mentoring. We are actually the cheapest mentoring programme out there - we have price matched with leading competitors and come about a couple of hundred under them. We also offer ten feedback tutorials whereas our competitors offer five across one year. We are also ethical in that we are currently fund raising to offer disadvantaged candidates free places for next year (watch this space!). So, rather than being a scam we are actually socially conscious and responsible. We also, in general, offer art mentorship at a way cheaper price than university education currently does. In England it comes in at around 9K per year - instantly plunging students into crippling debt. If I were starting out now I’d do a programme like this. It’s got momentum and it’s great value.

It is cheaper, but there’s a vast difference between studying fine art at a college/uni (and I speak from experience having gone that route), and an online course. Whilst I accept that some students will undoubtedly benefit, it can’t come even close to comparing the two, and any resulting ‘certificate’ will have little credible standing. However, the point that several members have here, is that you’re using a discussion forum for commercial purposes.
Al , my grand daughter is studying fine art at university .  At the end of her studies she will have a recognisable degree . Whatever she chooses to do with her life she will still have that degree.  Not a “certificate” from a commercial venture which you appear to be  This is not a commercial site no matter how many people you have signed up for your course. It’s cheapskate advertising and quite unethical.  Not a good image I wouldn’t have thought .
Still sounds like advertising to me.
It matters little how well you mentor, how ethical you are or how good your artist are the fact remains that you are still freeloading on this forum. I wonder how much it would have cost to advertise as much, maybe you should be ethical and pay up for some of the time. It would be better if we the users of the forum ignored your posts, instead of answering them and giving you more forum coverage.  But maybe then  you would move on to some other site to gain free advertising.
Robert - yes, my avatar is a painted self portrait.  Thanks for the compliment but I certainly don't think I've cracked portraiture.   As for this ongoing debate, I will leave it for others to continue.  All I can say is learning is a good thing however, whenever and wherever you do it.
