Thank you Sandra and Robert. I finished the tree root sketch last night and I’m thinking of watercolour as it’s a Scots Pine growing on a bank side there are some beautiful colours in the roots that are exposed. The other was a very quick sketch of a huge dockside crane , will try it again when I have more time.
I find portraits and figure sketches quite difficult, when I state a figure sketch I usually make a hash of it at first and need to make constant adjustments. Some figure sketches from last night’s sketches I will I have a separate book for figure and will use them at some point in paintings . Also started another tree sketch the photos are not cropped as I thought it gave a better idea of what and how I work .
I thought I'd post a comment on this slightly older thread rather than disrupt Dixie's tree thread - these things can gang rather frequently agley if we're not careful.. Apart from when I'm mucking about a bit, I don't post many sketches on here or on the Gallery: that's because mine aren't intended to stand on their own right: they're nearly always studies for paintings, or try-outs - just seeing what happens if I start scribbling with pencil, carbon, ink, pastel and so on, often in combination.  Generally speaking, I can do better than my sketches - so I think I've got a bit nervous about showing them; you'd think "Oh dear, he HAS gone orff...!"; however, so long as you know that these are just experiments in bits of ink, paint and so on..... I'll bung a few on, in the next few days.  There's a big difference between my sketches, anyway, and WIPs, or works for critique: not that I mind a critique, but .... well, I'm running on again. I do that, you know... yes, given half a chance I'll rattle on like a chattering gibbon; and did I tell you about the time when (runs on for pages more...) Maurice on the fig-tree, October '24
That dockside crane is ambitious!  I think I might have avoided that like the plague - all those different angles to contend with!  You DO have a real go at things, I admire that.
Robert I look forward to seeing your sketches , it what this thread is about showing what we doodle , scribbles, draw etc. It’s the place to put the very work you’re taking about to let us get the ideas behind painting or drawing in more detail. Post by all means , and restrict the amount of pages you use for chatting on to under ten if possible.

That’s a superb sketch Alan great detail.
Tessa, you asked about Raw Umber. I would recommend it. I give the site a trial for free, then decided to join. If you are interested in anatomical, figure and portrait drawing, it is a place you can get as little or as much practice as you want.  I think they do a free session for none members a couple of times a month. It also has an abundance of excellent quality reference images to use as you wish. I go to life drawing classes now but will use this in combination. The tutors all have different approaches but you can pick up techniques that suite you best, so you will definitely improve your figure and portrait work with guided practice and that's what it offers. Hope this helps.
A superb portrait study Denise. I sketched some trees that I will use at sone point in painting or sketch’s , all are small trees  and I used a fountain pen for the first one the ballpoint pen for the rest .
Pencil sketch of a steam tug , one of my favourite vessels.
Good pencil drawing Paul, they’re just so interesting to draw… in my opinion anyway!i

Thank you Denise. Didn’t see this earlier as on grandma duty in London on Monday, and a few busy days. I’m storing this up for the New Year. It will give me some inspiration to get going again then. X
