Don’t slavishly copy them, that’s what most artists tend to do in my experience, and certainly on this website.  And I’m talking about animal portraits as well as landscapes - use them as a reference point and do your own thing! It’s an old cliche, but so true… you’ve got the photo so why try and do an exact copy of it!
Painting isn't about copying...it's about being creative.  Do it your way.
Trying to express something…..a feeling, a look, an atmosphere.
I feel a bit of a sinner here in as much as I love doing my own versions of art that inspires me. Generally it could only be labelled copying in subject never detail. Lew's photos are incredible and I love them and his ability to spot the gems.
Well, I can do both. I do what I enjoy, and what sells. It is fine if you do life, or photos. Shouldn’t, couldn’t, wouldn’t.  Same old. Same old. Anyway, the price of eggs has gone up.
It is all about money now. But I liked the update, Are there any suggestions? AI I suspect!
I thought the same Alan when I noticed it earlier.
Are there still copyright free photos on this site?  There certainly used to be - I'm in the middle of cooking right now, or I'd have a trawl. There are certainly many others - Mr Google will find them. Terry is not alone in seeking out photos for translation into paintings - one way or the other, I've painted or drawn an awful lot of scenes around here, and am not averse from seeking fresh inspiration; on the whole though - there are many other things worth doing; reversing an old photo; taking sections of it, and making a new picture from two, three, more images. If I were going to be purist about it, I'd say work from your own photos when you can, and of course from your sketches - the weather is having a bit of a dampener on my sketching, in every sense of the term, and I do have some problems with just making things up - though why not, if you have that sort of imagination?   The one thing I wouldn't do is take a photograph from the web of an area, country, or continent of which I knew nothing, and try to make a painting of that - you won't get any authentic "feel", the atmosphere will be alien - the colours, the foliage, the birds and bees - unless you know them, have seen and experienced them, it will be very hard to make the picture work.  Perhaps not impossible, but hard work.

We used to have a whole selection of photographs to paint from but sadly these pages were lost in translation somewhere when we upgraded the site! However here is a link to the photos we shared on the forum during lockdown for painting inspiration https://www.painters-online.co.uk/forum/painters-online/daily-photo/
There are no rules to art. No plagiarism that’s all.  When I started decorating for a living, you did all aspects. Now, there are paper hangers, mastic men and painters, all can be separate trades. Times changes, and with so many more people in the world, so does point of view. We have realism, Ai, graphics. HeIl, modern art is topsy turvy in my view, but I have to respect it. I guess it’s a fight back against Ai so we still control. Nothing is out of the picture art wise… pun intended. If someone sets boundaries then we are doomed. Gues what I am saying is, what was right yesterday, no longer will be today.

There are rules well there are in my book.  If you want to use someone else's concept or photograph...ASK. Don't assume it's yours for the taking.
